AdBlue®/DEF

Measure amonia concentration and carbon dioxide for AdBlue® production

The reduction of CO2 emissions and exhaust gases is a cause of international importance. For this reason, the automotive industry has developed the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology. Selective Catalytic Reduction systems use liquid urea, a nitrogen-based compound. Injected into the hot exhaust gases as a fine vapor, urea turns to ammonia and converts harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) into harmless nitrogen and water vapor. This liquid is known as AdBlue® in Europe and Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) in the USA. AdBlue® / DEF is a transparent, odorless, and eco-friendly mixture of distilled water with 32.5% of synthetic urea. The proper concentration of AdBlue / DEF is essential to reduce the harmful NOx emissions and to reduce the lifetime of the SCR components. According to ISO 22241, deviations in urea concentration of +/- 0.8% should be prevented. Higher or lower concentrations in AdBlue ® / DEF can reduce the system performance and increase the maintenance costs of the SCR systems. SCHMIDT + HAENSCH’s refractometers are the perfect tool to permanently monitor the quality of both reactants and products.
